EXP 2 - CONCEPTS

Olson Kundig

1) Architecture is the intersection between the poetic and the rational
2) Contradictory objectives; open to environment, yet closed to create privacy
3) A space is not constrained by area inside the building, a space is shaped by it
4) Architecture is a movement and it transforms its surroundings
5) References homes as primitive places
6) Architecture must be as intimate as a family member

Buckminster Fuller

1) There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you its going to be a butterfly
2) Love is metaphysical gravity
3) Ideals of ephemeralisation; “doing more and more with less and less until you can do everything with nothing”
4) Simplicity is the true measure of complexity
5) Reorganising the environment for prosperity
6) “Nature is trying very hard to make us succeed, but nature does not depend on us. We are not the only experiment.”

EXP 1 - DEVELOPMENT

ABOVE: DIAMOND (ROLEX)
BELOW: MECHANICAL (HAZAN MOTORWORKS)
I chose this section because it is one of my favourite and it is closet to a realistic architectural space.

DRAFT MODEL
I built this model according to my section. However, this model looks look an extrusion from a two-dimensional drawing. Therefore, I rebuilt the model

ABOVE GROUND MODEL
I rebuilt the model by first building two separate forms

LEFT COMPONENT (SMALL)

RIGHT COMPONENT (LARGE)

I tried to put these two component in different ways. For example:

However, I want the left component to stand out and resulted in the shape of the final model.

BELOW GROUND MODEL
I rotated the boxes in different way to make the below ground structure looks more interesting.

Resulted in this (the coloured structure), which the boxes are put both horizontally and vertically.

ADDING ELEMENTS

I built various objects to be put in the final model.

A cube with x-shaped beam as a supporting structure.

The building level with a void in the middle.

Stairs for one of the boxes.

The cube which is the major element of the above ground supporting structure.

TEXTURES USED
WRINKLED

DENATURED

POROUS

MESSY

CHAOTIC

MOLECULES

GLAMOROUS

ELEGANT

DRIPPING

I chose these texture due to different reasons. "GLAMOROUS" and "ELEGANT" are reflecting the nature of Rolex design as they are used in the above ground structure. Some of the above textures remind me of motorcycle. For example, "MESSY" AND "CHAOTIC" maybe the appearance of a motorbike driver, "MOLECULES" reminds me about a motorbike that components have to work together, and "DRIPPING" reminds me of motor oil. Moreover they all look good as a texture with repetitive pattern.
